A recent Government forecast predicts that there are currently approximately 200,000 plug-in cars in the UK and by 2021 there will be 2 million! As you can see by the graph below, they may have underestimated!

EV CHARGEPOINT GRANTS AND HOW THEY WORK

The government originally set up a dedicated department, known as OLEV, which is the “Office for Low Emission Vehicles” who forecast and monitor everything to do with low emission vehicles, including electric vehicles.

The “Office for Low Emission Vehicles” (or “OLEV”) has since been renamed and it will, from now on be known as the “Office for Zero Emission Vehicles” (or “OZEV”) to align with the government’s net-zero ambitions and is responsible for overseeing the transition to zero-emission cars and vans.  It is expected that while the industry adjusts to the change, the names “OLEV” and “OZEV” will be used interchangeably for a time.

Currently available when you purchase an Electric car there is a Plug-in Car Grant or PICG.

This grant is available through car manufactures and dealerships who pass the discount to customers. The vehicles have to be on the government’s approved list.

Here’s what discount you get on the purchase price:

• Cars – up to 35%, capped at £1,500
• Mopeds – up to 35%, capped at £150
• Motorcycles – up to 35%, capped at £500
• Small vans – up to 35%, capped at £2,500
• Large vans – up to 20%, capped at £5,000

UK drivers are already making the switch to electric vehicles. As of the end of February 2021, there were more than 455,000 plug-in vehicles registered in the UK – with approximately 215,000 battery-electric vehicles (BEV) and 240,000 plug-in hybrids (PHEV). 2020 saw the biggest annual increase in number of registrations, with more than 175,000 electric vehicles registered, showing a growth of 66% on 2019.

For Your Home – Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS)

The Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS) which helps plug-in vehicle owners offset up to £350 of their home EV charger is ending on 31st March 2022 for homeowners (including people with mortgages) who live in single-unit properties such as bungalows and detached, semi-detached, or terraced housing.

The scheme will remain open to homeowners who live in flats and people in rental accommodation (flats and single-use properties).

To claim, you’ll need to:

• Have a home with off-street parking
• Check your electric car is eligible
• Get an approved charger and installer to carry out the work

For Work – Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) grant

The Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) is a voucher-based scheme for businesses for electric car charger installation. It can cover up to 75% of the cost and a maximum of £350 for each socket, for up to 40 sockets.

Here are three main points to consider when applying for WCS:

• Your business has to have a Companies House Reference Number 
• Own the business premises or have the landlord’s permission to install the chargers
• Use an authorised EV charger installer
