One of the more confusing aspects of buying an EV is how to charge it at home. Our garage is not connected to our house, and is 30 metres from the consumer unit in our house. We’d been told by an electrician (incorrectly) that there wasn’t enough power in the garage for an EV charger.

Fortunately JEC Electrical Ltd told us this information was incorrect, and after a few phone calls to elicit information from us, was able to install a charger on the wall of our garage.

It is possible to run our specific charger at 3.5 kW instead of the more usual 7kW owing to the power supply to our garage. This means we still get a reasonable charge to our EV, sufficient to charge it around 50% overnight, which is enough for our needs with a small EV, and much safer than using a “granny charger”.

The installation went smoothly and the electrician explained everything clearly, and left the site clean and tidy. He showed us how to set up an app to time the charging window for our off-peak electricity tariff and checked we knew how to plug in, and unplug the charger.

I’d recommend JEC Electrical Ltd to anyone who has bought an EV and needs a home charger.
